Online Popularity Contest of 3D Printing

Tonight I did some analysis on the popularity of 3D printing on the internet on Google Insights. In this post I share the more interesting results.

Let’s start with 3D Printing. Do you see the hype?

And now with the label preferred by the 3D printing industry: Additive Manufacturing. Again do you see the hype?

Now let’s combine the two and see which term – 3D printing or additive manufacturing - is more popular.

Clearly 3D printing wins from additive manufacturing hands down.

Who are the most popular manufacturers? (I ignored EOS and Objet because their brand names are useless for this type of research.)

Makerbot is making a splash while whoever runs the marketing department at 3D Systems needs to step up their efforts.

So now let’s take a look who the most popular online 3D printing services are:

You can definitely see the increase in attention 3D printing is getting on the internet. The online 3D printing services are rising as well with Shapeways taking the lead. Makerbot is the most popular 3D printing brand and with their $10MM series A investment I see that this will further increase. And last but not least everybody calls it 3D printing. Can we now please dump the archaic additive manufacturing label?

I would like to thank Google for making such an excellent service available to all and for free. If you were AOL or Microsoft or Apple all this info would either be unavailable, secret or very expensive.
